Buksa the unlikely hero as Poland finally beat Netherlands

Unheralded Adam Buksa was the unlikely hero as Poland finally ended their winless run against Netherlands with a 1-0 victory in Hamburg on Tuesday.

The Poles had not beaten their rivals in 12 meetings dating back to 2008, but Buksa's 20th-minute goal proved enough to secure a famous victory at the UEFA EURO 2024.

Poland made a bright start to the match and should have taken the lead in the 10th minute when Robert Lewandowski found himself through on goal, but he fired wide of the target.

However, the Poles did not have to wait long for their goal, as Buksa headed home from close range after a cross from Przemyslaw Frankowski.

Netherlands responded well to going behind and created a number of chances to equalize, but they were unable to find a way past Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

The Poles defended resolutely in the second half and held on for a famous victory.
